in a dungeon…

DPS - Heroic Stonecore

DPS – Heroic Stonecore

PuG tank is #1; #2 and #3 are guildies, and I just managed to out dps the healer (Holy healer – if it was a Disc healer I’d be rock bottom – ha!ha! – get it?  Stonecore?  Rock bottom?  When you’ve got nothing else, it helps to have a sense of humor.)

I died three times from standing in stupid (yes, it’s been a while since I did Stonecore.)

Okay – here’s what I did:

Combat spec – reforged all gear according to Shadowcraft.  Don’t really understand the Expertise numbers but I’ve got 26/23 – is that good?  I have no idea.

So…SS, SnD, SS to 3 combo points, RS and Eviscerate.  Of course I’d run out of Energy somewhere during this so I had a lot of white damage filler and I’d sometimes use up left over Combo points with Recuperate when the mob(s) was dead.

I did remember to use my interrupt especially with DBM screaming “Interrupt now, stupid!!”

Of course, since everyone was doing double my dps stuff would die before I could Sprint over to it and get rolling.

We managed to complete the dungeon despite my untimely deaths and stellar deeps.

Oh yeah, I am so not ready for Heroics!  Good thing we got a patient tank.

I also noticed that with a few gear upgrades ZA/ZG is suddenly “available” for me – ugh! I wish those were still separate as there is no way in hell I have the dps for one of those!

I think I’ll stick to normal dungeons for a while.

I also had my Priest purchase the VP boots for my Rogue but haven’t sent them yet.  Since I believe LFD determines ilvl from not only what you’re wearing but what’s in your bags and bank, those boots might kick me right into Well of Eternity or something.

Think I’ll just save those boots until I can break 10k – if ever.

I’m still missing a few enchants since I don’t have all the reputations yet (except for the “lesser” ones I can get) but I doubt even fully enchanted will get me another 5k.

Oh well.

In the meantime, I went over to Kalimdor to do the little quest chain to get Withers.

Withers

I didn’t want to try another dungeon so I decided to go fishing and finally caught the Giant Sewer Rat.

Ah…I remember the glory days when I was Queen of the Rogues, Pick Pocket Champion of Azeroth, and would two-shot any mobs before they knew what hit them.

Now I’m not only last on dps and crank out less than 50% of what damage the healer can do, well let’s face it – I totally fail as a rogue.

So I’ve taken the advice and suggestions given to me, fixed up a few talent points and tried out Combat.

I was also very lucky to have a couple of guildies not only drag me through a few normal dungeons and give me advice and tips, they also gave me some crafted/JP gear to upgrade my sorry quest greens.

I think I was running the normals as Sub and when I tried Combat well, Combat is certainly “easier” simply because I don’t have to worry about being behind a mob.  I can just run up and start smacking it.

I didn’t have a “proper” main hand for Combat so when a guildie said he had a Tremendous Tankard of Terror for me, I remembered I had been saving one in my bank – woohoo!

I knew this would come in handy one day so I’m glad I didn’t sell it!

Anyway, nothing cheered me up more than the idea of whopping mobs with a giant tankard!

Lost City of the Tol'vir

Lost City of the Tol’vir

So a big thanks to my guildies for the dungeon runs and gear – that was above and beyond the call of “duty” for a sorry rogue!

A few “normal” dungeons runs – mostly Lost City and one dreaded Grim Batol -  and I got more gear upgrades.

Grim Batol

Grim Batol

With some decent gear and a new spec, I found I was dying a lot less especially at the Molten Front dailies.

The day before I couldn’t kill anything without dying a couple times.  This time I did the dailies as Combat and it was noticeably easier.

Of course this is mostly because of the gear upgrades and I reforged/enchanted what I could.  Yeah, I forgot I was an enchanter – duh!

I don’t have all the enchants yet and I really don’t want to spend 4000 gold on a chest enchant for a green item.  I think there is a reputation blue chest I can buy or I can just save up the JPs since I’m close to getting enough for a chest with a few more runs.

I had at least the cheaper enchants for the rest of my green gear and who knew as an Enchanter I could enchant my rings?

With my kindly donated gear upgrades, reforges, a few gems/enchants my ilvl was high enough to run Heroics.

Yeah, right.

I think I have the “basic” Combat priority but I’m probably missing a couple of things I have to work on yet.

But…nothing like practice so I bit the bullet and queued for a Heroic.

Heroic Deadmines – oh goodie.

My dps was certainly better but I was still about 50% of everyone else although I managed to at least out-dps the healer.

I guess the group either noticed I was still gearing up or just felt sorry for me because no one raged at me or kicked me.

It was going along fine until the reaper part.  Because I was lowest dps I was asked to do the vehicle part.  I’ve never done it before and said so, but then the hunter pulled the boss (the tank was *not* impressed) and I couldn’t find the vehicle.

I spent most of that fight 1) looking for the vehicle (where is the stupid thing anyway??) and 2) running from the adds while trying to get a few shots at the boss.

To my surprise we got an achievement.

Prototype Prodigy

Prototype Prodigy

I’m shocked no one died, but after that things went fairly well until the very end.  I died once at Cookie because I’m sure I was the only one eating the good and bad food and the deck was covered in swirly green stuff.

And I also died at the very end – no idea why unless my Rogue is going to follow in the footsteps of my Dead First priest!

Heroic Deadmines

Heroic Deadmines

All that dropped that I could use was leather pants, but I didn’t win them so maybe next time.

I definitely need to use some targeting macros since I’m sure I lost a lot of dps because I was slow on the draw – especially for the “charging” mobs and the times the tank decided to ball room dance mobs all over instance.

At least I didn’t have to worry about getting behind them and yes, it’s great fun whacking them with my Tankard!

Oh, and by the way – am I ready to raid and get the Legendary Rogue weapons yet??

The raid lockout had been extended so all we had to do was Ragnaros.

Of course, it had been a while since I’ve done that fight and I wasn’t on my “usual” side, but that was no excuse…

First Dead

First Dead

Yeah, I ran directly into the fire and died before Phase 2, so I made myself useful by counting floor tiles until the rest of raid killed Rag and Falahla looted her last item.

Contrary to popular belief I really don’t try to die on purpose. It was a stupid mistake on my part. For some reason I thought the fire on the floor was over when I ran into it.

Rogue News

I didn’t have much to do with my Rogue over the weekend so I worked on the more boring things like finishing up a few quests in Twilight Highlands to open the dailies and level up cooking skills.

Now I can cook my own buff food

Now I can cook my own buff food – yippee!

I also changed my Sub spec to something more appropriate for level 85 than my leveling spec, and fixed up my Combat spec to the recommended spec at Elitist Jerks.

I had been disenchanting all the sword/mace quest rewards so I didn’t have a weapon to try out Combat again.  I finally found one as a quest reward so I switched to Combat to try it out for a few Twilight Highland quests.

I read the spell priorities, set up my bars/keybinds and went off to kill stuff for the Twilight Highlands “wedding” quest chain.

I wasn’t doing too badly although it didn’t seem as if stuff was dying any faster with Combat than with Sub, until I got to the Nightmare quest chain.

You know the part where you have to rescue four guys caught in the tentacles?  Well, I died a minimum of two times per tentacle – sometimes three times before I got it.

Yeah, that’s with the NPCs helping me.

It wouldn’t have been too bad if I didn’t get three or four of those stupid ooze things beating on me while I was killing a tentacle.

I eventually got it but I don’t know if I’m just playing Combat wrong or if I just really, really stink at playing a Rogue.

To add insult to injury, tentacles and oozes don’t have any pockets to pick.

Consumed by Nightmare

Consumed by Nightmare

I switched back to Sub and tweaked around a few talent points because the “standard” build I was using didn’t have any points at all in Nightstalker – a talent I find extremely useful for quests.

It’s amazing how many mobs I can avoid killing with a couple seconds knocked off of Stealth.  I know, it’s not in a “proper” Sub dps build but I don’t have to worry about a raiding spec for very, very long time – if ever!

After the Tentacle Disaster I went back to Mount Hyjal to finish up all the quests I needed to open the Molten Front.

I’m not sure how many I have to do so I’m just plugging along enjoying the “easy mode” because all the mobs are green to me.  I can two-shot everything now that I out-level it.  A far cry from getting killed with every mob when I first did the starter quests!

I got all the way up to the Jousting quest before I quit for the night.  If there wasn’t a couple of pet rewards for doing that quest I’d skip it because I really, really don’t like that joust mechanic.

The stuff I’ll suffer through for a pet amazes me sometimes…

Speaking of pets, I got the Strand Crawler in my Bag of Fishing Disappointments.  Apparently my Rogue is also starting a nice collection of Worthless Colored Glass…

Strand Crawler

Strand Crawler

I know I’m not going to learn anything about correctly playing a Rogue by doing easy quests but once I get the Molten Front quest chain open I’m going to work on learning Combat and Sub so I can be reasonably competent with both.

At least, that’s my theory…

Blending In

blend in

the world is moving and morphing at warp speed and the meaningless, dead-end chatter and enemy-crafted banter is piling up online like rush hour traffic.  Christ is being discarded.  biblical values are being marginalized more and more.  influence is the currency and increasingly, Christians are broke.  if you choose to roam aimlessly and blend into the online world, some pay perish – eternally.  @stickyjesus

blend.  blend in.

ugh.

when i read that, distaste rose up in my heart!

i dont want to blend in!

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out.

Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.  Romans 12:1-2 MSG, AMP, NKJV

our challenge is to be nonconformists.  to not blend in.  to be different.  to be counter culture.

or on the flip side…

its to conform to God’s Kingdom culture, to be recognizable as His child, to be of His world, not of the world around us.

blending in to me reeks of compromise, silence, head bowing, grayness and living limited.

but when we dont blend in we make a stand for righteousness, we walk by faith not by sight, we love, give, rise up and live to please God.

i dont want to blend in.  i know i am not perfect, that i am flawed, but my heart leans towards wanting to be holy and live for Jesus, BECAUSE it pleases Him and BECAUSE He gave His all for me that i might be saved and rescued.

and so i want to live holy, faultless and innocent.

i want to live transformed.  the new me wants to live.

Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17 AMP

Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed— not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence— continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life— in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labour for nothing.  Philippians 2:12-16

when we blend in, we hide the light.

when we compromise, we dim the light.

to shine we must be different from the darkness.

the reality is: We are a Christians.  We are forgiven.  We are righteous.  We are a children of God.  We are loved.  We are saved.  We are redeemed.  We are the light of the world.   We are called.  We are chosen.  We are a servant of God.  We are filled with the Holy Spirit.  We are witnesses empowered by God.  We are ministers of reconciliation. We are ambassadors.  We are supernatural.

Different.

Don’t blend in.  Don’t hide the great things that God has done and is doing.  Don’t hide GOD from the world.  Don’t hide the light.

Light will always penetrate darkness. It is a law of nature. It is the same way in the spiritual realm. When the light of God shows up, it literally shows up, and the darkness flees before it. It must, because that’s what darkness does when light comes. Simple.

We are not our own?  For we were bought at a price ;   we were rescued from the useless way of life that we learned from your ancestors. But we know that we were not rescued by such things as silver or gold that don’t last forever. we were rescued by the precious blood of Christ, that spotless and innocent lamb ; so  it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

1 Peter 1:19, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Galatians 2:20

We are not of this world and we don’t cling to it.  We make a choice to live our lives in this world, living and breathing and physical, but we are citizens with a Holy Mighty King whom we serve.  We don’t blend in with the world.  That takes a decision to be made and a decision to be lived upon.

Live bold obedient lives.  Make the choice to follow God.  Don’t blend yourselves in by compromising.  Don’t camouflage yourself by blending in with the world and disobeying God.  Don’t let compromise become a way of life.  Be holy and follow God.

Don’t compromise in the way you talk.

Don’t compromise in what you wear.

Don’t compromise in relationships.

Don’t compromise in what you watch.

Don’t compromise in what you do socially, in the music you listen to, in the places you go, in the conversations you have, in the computer games you play, in the things you read…

The goal is not to live gray lives but to live lives knowing our awesome amazing God that stretched out his arms on the cross, as Jesus Christ, dying to make the way for us to be saved and clean and forgiven and new. The call is to not blend in but to stand out as lights in this world.

As a Rogue

Luckily it was an all-guild “normal” dungeon run and we popped Vortex Pinnacle.

Ha! I thought, “easy mode.”

Let’s see…we had a Paladin tank, a Shadow Priest, Mage, Holy Priest and me.  We were all (mostly) under-geared in quest greens except the Holy Priest who was rocking raid gear.

If I had any doubts about my ability to handle dungeon mobs as a Rogue, well…my suspicions were confirmed.

I absolutely stink.  No question about it.

No, it wasn’t just the 3k less dps I was doing than everyone else.  Heck, all I did was average about 3k dps.

It was trying to keep behind the mobs so I could actually do something – anything at all – that required me to be looking at a mob butt.

And what do you do when you can’t be in melee range?  You know that one fight where you have to go running in and out when the tornadoes close in.

I would just stand there like a stupid out of melee range until I remembered Rogues have thrown weapons.

I know, you’re thinking “Geez for crying out loud you didn’t really stand there like a stupid and throw weapons at the boss, did you?”

Why yes, yes I did!

The worst mobs were those flashy balls that zap you until you kill them.  Where exactly is their back?  Sure, I can Shadow Step to get behind the first one, but when it’s on cool down how do you know which side is their back?

Thrown weapons to the rescue!  I tried Fan of Knives but for some reason mashing my keybind didn’t do anything.

In fact, a lot of my keybinds didn’t do anything.  I could hit Backstab once, and the next time I tried it I would get the dreaded “a more powerful spell is active” message and it would be greyed out.

The tank gave me some sound advice on what I should be doing but I didn’t have the heart to tell him that was exactly what I was doing.

You know you’re really bad when you’re doing the spell priorities in the correct order and you still look like you’re doing it all wrong.

On the bright side, I now know where I’m having problems (all of it) so I can work on fixing my mistakes.

I did have a couple of shining moments.  I got to use Sap for CC, and I remembered that Kick will interrupt.

Sapping a Mob

Sapping a Mob

Kick will interrupt even better if one remembers to use it during a cast instead of after the cast…

I also forgot about Tricks of the Trade and Vanish which might have been useful when I pulled aggro and a mob was beating on me.

Considering the huge arsenal of “stuff” Rogues have available to them, I forgot about a lot.

We killed all the bosses, no one died and a few nice upgrade pieces dropped for the tank and casters, but nothing for me -  not even anything useful from the quest rewards.

Vortex Pinnacle

Vortex Pinnacle

But honestly, the gear doesn’t matter so much as getting a little bit more experience and discovering that despite my complete failure, I still love playing a Rogue and how much I appreciate very patient guildies!

What bothers me the most is that I was surrounded by plenty of Elite mobs with big, juicy pockets and completely forgot to Pick Pocket even one of them.

Guild Contest – 5k for the first person(s) to level up characters the guild needs for the Classy Achievement!

I like gold, so I dusted off my Worgen Death Noob stuck at level 68, purchased a few heirlooms for extra experience, and planned to quest my way to level 85 and 5000 gold!

I picked up a few Death Noob tips from a guildie and was rocking my way through the Borean Tundra starter quests.

I made it to level 70 in record time when someone announced they were going to race change a DK, so I put my Death Noob back on the shelf for now.

Oh well.  At least I got her Alchemy up a few more points.  I also missed the ability to Stealth and Pick Pocket.  While Death Grip is definitely entertaining, Pick Pocket is a lot more fun.

Apparently I posted a rather embarrassing screen shot of someone stuck in a tree, so to redeem myself here is a very nice screen shot of us on the boat during a Looking for Loot…err…Looking for Disappointments….err…Looking for Raid.

That transmog tier set looks fantastic!

Of course, nothing useful dropped.  I’m not sure I even need to run it anymore, but it’s fun and something to do.

I logged back on my Rogue and took her to the Darkmoon Faire because she was only a few tickets away from getting a pet.

It was a tough decision as to which pet to get – what pet would be best suited for a Rogue?

A monkey, of course!

Darkmoon Faire Monkey

I could imagine a Rogue training a monkey to pick pocket – I might even look for a matching transmog outfit!

It’s probably time for my Rogue to start running dungeons for gear so I looked at what was available to me in LFD and the first of three “normals” on the list was Grim Batol.

Yeah, right.

So…I closed LFD and noticed TB was starting in a few minutes.

According to the Rogue Manual I should be an over-powered PvP machine in any battleground.

I think the Alliance was defending but there were only a few of us so we lost.  I managed to Sap a few Horde so that’s always exciting, and I even got a couple of achievements.

Yes, my gear is horrible and my Hit was too low as I was missing a lot. I died a few times but it was fun so I might do it again just to practice up my Rogue skills.

I might even make her the Leatherworking starter PvP set…if I ever get my Leatherworking character leveled up.

100 Honorable Kills

100 Honorable Kills

At least I finished that horrible Thrall quest chain and got her the cloak.

Now, don’t get me wrong – it’s really a great story and ends with a wedding – and I love weddings!

It’s the actual quests that are horrible.  Killing stuff to fill a bar to 100 when each mob is about 5 points?  And if you die the bar gets reset so you have to start over?  Yes, it does – I tried continuing when the bar disappeared and when it showed up again it was reset.

The final quest at the totems was extra horrible because it only counted kills within a certain range of the totem.  Fine, except there weren’t enough mobs around so I would have to wait for respawns or pull other mobs close and hope it was close enough to count for the bar.

Just tell me to kill x number of whatever and forget the stupid bars!

Nothing like ruining a good story with horrid quest mechanics.

I’ve got a few more quests to do but after that long, dragged out quest chain I don’t think I’ll do any quests for a while.

Maybe I’ll see if I can train that monkey to pick pocket…

Nothing like ruining a good story with horrid quest mechanics.

I’ve got a few more quests to do but after that long, dragged out quest chain I don’t think I’ll do any quests for a while.

Maybe I’ll see if I can train that monkey to pick pocket…

Just tell me to kill x number of whatever and forget the stupid bars!

I made the big push through Twilight Highlands and got my Rogue to level 85.

Level 85

Level 85

It wasn’t too painful, just very, very slow…

Yes, I died a few times (stupid Dragonmaw) when I got more than two attacking me but I didn’t die nearly as much as my squishy Priest.

I’d like to say it was because I was playing a rogue to it’s full potential – with sneakiness and strategy – but I can’t take credit for surviving.

It was all because of Vanish.

OMG I love Vanish!  It take me out of combat and I can stealth and run like a chicken!

Aggro that Highland Dragon by mistake?  Vanish!  Oh look – six Dragonmaw running after me?  Vanish!  Warlord Halthar forgets I don’t have the quest yet and charges me? Vanish!

I believe the times I did die was because Vanish was on cool down.  I’m going to make sure I have the talent point, get the glyph and remember to use Preparation!

I have more quests to do in Twilight Highlands before I open up the dailies, and I have to go back to Mount Hyjal and finish the quest chain to open up the Molten Front but I’m sure at level 85 I’ll do much better in Mount Hyjal than my first round where I died at the starter quests.

I got enough quest gear upgrades to open up all the “normal” dungeons including a thrown weapon upgrade.

Yeah, I’m nervous about dungeons.  Melee is a whole different perspective than ranged.  I have to be more aware of certain mechanics and run out at the right times to avoid getting stomped (I’m looking at you, Servias Windterror!)

But I need the gear so I guess that’s the only option for now.  My Priest has a lot of VP to purchase boots and bracers later on.  I don’t want to purchase anything too soon as I believe even gear in the bank boosts your ilvl, and I sure don’t want to accidentally get into an Heroic dungeon!

I still forget to re-apply poisons so I’m going to look at a few Rogue addons and see if I can find something useful or set it up in Power Auras.  I could also use a few macros so I’ll check those out as well.

Best part about being a Level 85 Rogue?

I finally get to open all those 425 lockboxes taking up my bank space!
