A fesztivál kilenc napja alatt nem csak a mozikban (Uránia, Toldi, Kino, Örökmozgó), de egy új helyszínen, az A38 hajón is látogathattak vetítéseket a nézők.

Ahogyan a 2012-es számadatok is mutatják, a Titanic Filmfesztivál a legnagyobb volumenű, nemzetközi filmszakmai esemény Magyarországon. Hat nemzetközi premiert tartottak, a programban összesen ötvenhét egész estés film és hat rövidfilm (kísérőfilm) szerepelt. Huszonkilenc országból érkeztek alkotások a mustrára, huszonöt különböző nyelven. Tizenegy közönségtalálkozón beszélgethettek a nézők azzal a tíz külföldi alkotóval, akik személyesen is ellátogattak az eseményre. Hét szakmai programnak és három gálának adott otthont a fesztivál. Kilenc sajtóvetítést és száztizenegy közönségvetítést szerveztek, ezek közül tizennégy teltházas volt.

A szervezők, a mozik személyzetével együtt ötvenöten dolgoztak a fesztivál sikerén. Munkájukat hetvenöt önkéntes, hét vendégkísérő és tizenhat tolmács segített, közülük ketten csak azért utaztak haza Londonból, hogy idén se hagyják ki a Titanicot.

Ha valaki minden vetítést végignézett volna a fesztiválon, összesen 187 órát töltött volna moziban.

És ami nem számszerűsíthető: rengeteg pozitív visszajelzés érkezett mind a filmszakma, mind a nézők részéről.

A szervezők természetesen mindent elkövetnek, hogy jövőre is elhozhassák a legjobb filmeket a hazai mozirajongóknak. Reményeik szerint a huszadik, jubileumi Titanic Nemzetközi Filmfesztivál 2013. április 5. és 13. között is várja majd a nézőket.

To include non ARC files in your ARC project do the following:

Click on your project in the Navigator.

Pick your target.

Click ‘Build Phases’

Click ‘Compile Sources’

Select all the files you want to flag as non ARC

Hit return

Type ‘-fno-objc-arc’

What this basically does is it sets a flag and marks those files as non ARC (so the compiler won’t try to compile them as ARC).

Hit compile and those errors should go away.

There is a classic collection of logic puzzles of Lewis Carroll (from his book on symbolic logic), in which he presents a set of premises and asks to derive a conclusion using all of the premises.  Here are four examples of such sets:

• Babies are illogical;
• Nobody is despised who can manage a crocodile;
• Illogical persons are despised.

• My saucepans are the only things that I have that are made of tin;
• I find all your presents very useful;
• None of my saucepans are of the slightest use.

• No  potatoes of mine, that are new, have been boiled;
• All of my potatoes in this dish are fit to eat;
• No unboiled potatoes of mine are fit to eat.

• No ducks waltz;
• No officers ever decline to waltz;
• All my poultry are ducks.

After a certain amount of effort, I was able to gamify the solution process to these sort of puzzles in a Scratch game, although I am not fully satisfied with the results (in part due to the inherent technical limitations of the Scratch software, but also because I have not yet found a smooth user interface for this process).   In order to not have to build a natural language parser, I modified Lewis Carroll’s sentences somewhat in order to be machine-readable.  Here is a typical screenshot:

Unfortunately, the gameplay is somewhat clunkier than in the algebra game, basically because one needs three or four clicks and a keyboard press in order to make a move, whereas in the algebra game each click corresponded to one move. This is in part due to Scratch not having an easy way to have drag-and-drop or right-click commands, but even with a fully featured GUI, I am unsure how to make an interface that would make the process of performing a deduction easy; one may need a “smart” interface that is able to guess some possible intended moves from a minimal amount of input from the user, and then suggest these choices (somewhat similarly to the “auto-complete” feature in a search box).   This would require more effort than I could expend on a plane trip, though (as well as the use of a more powerful language than Scratch).

There are of course several existing proof assistants one could try to use as a model (Coq, Isabelle, etc.), but my impression is that the syntax for such assistants would only be easily mastered by someone who already is quite experienced with computer languages as well as proof writing, which would defeat the purpose of the games I have in mind.  But perhaps it is possible to create a proof assistant for a very restricted logic (such as one without disjunction) that can be easily used by non-experts…

My parents have decided that when they retire, they’re going to move to France and start an alpaca farm (the sheer specificity of this makes me smile). I’ve insisted they let me name the alpacas, and have already decided that one of them will be Frederick, and another Viola.

But until the time comes for a more permanent relocation, France remains my family’s annual vacation spot. My father lived there for some time, and is fluent. I am…less than fluent, but get by. My mum doesn’t speak French–well, she’s quite good with ordering food, having been a caterer–but is happy enough to point and say, “Je voudrais ca.”

Last year, I met up with my parents in Paris at the end of my three month stint in Liverpool. The Near Witch hadn’t come out yet, and I’d just finished the first draft of The Archived. It was a trip of stone and moss.

It was the perfect ending to a time in England.

This trip promises to be a bit different. We’re lurking at the edges of cities, within walking distance of the center, and driving distance of the dozen small towns nestled beyond.

I am going dark in the sense that I won’t be, you know, living on the internet as I usually do.

But I can’t promise there won’t be any posts here because I’m waiting to ANNOUNCE! THINGS! And if I get the chance to ANNOUNCE! THINGS! then I will hunt down an internet café or beg some hot young Frenchman to let me borrow his computer so that I can post (and, you know, admire said young frenchman).
